Late May Inshore Update

It's Spring on the Crystal Coast but it's been feeling a lot more like Summer lately.  Water temps have been steadily climbing towards 80 degrees and the fish are getting fired up.  In the two weeks since I've been back from the Roanoke, we've had to deal with some dirty water due to all the wind and rain we had in early May.  That lead us to throwing gold spoons, scented plastics and topwater plugs to get their attention.  I'm really happy to see the Reds responding to topwater again, as it's one of my favorite ways to target them.  The water has cleaned up more and more each day, and with that our opportunities to sight cast Reds on fly are improving daily.

The marsh has really come to life lately with tons of Mullet, Stingrays, good numbers of Flounder, and even a few Sheepshead on the flats.  High tide has us sight casting to fish in the flooded grass, and low tide has us pursuing pushes and wakes as the Redfish feed on schools of baitfish.  Most any bay or creek can potentially hold fish this time of year, but I've got some spots that are pretty stacked up with fish right now.

As we look forward into the next few months of fishing, we should continue to see opportunities for great fishing.  Redfish can be pursued at most any tide during the summer months, although I love a good sunrise high tide for spin anglers, and an early morning low tide can provide plenty of shots for fly anglers.  And don't forget those evening tailing tides this summer...by far my favorite way to pursue these fish.

And although the backwaters are getting all of the love right now, the nearshore has been really productive lately.  Plenty of Spanish Mackerel and Bluefish along the beaches, and Cobia, Sharks and Amberjack are possibilities if you feel like rolling the dice.

I've got dates open starting the second week of June so give me a shout if you want to go chase Redfish, or fish off the beaches for Spanish, Blues, Amberjack, Sharks, etc.
